In recent years, vinyl has had significant improvements in style and technology. Vinyl flooring options are now more comfortable and durable, and they can now create realistic wood and stone looks. Add vinyl’s lower price point and practicality, and it suddenly becomes a tough competitor against hardwood and natural stone flooring options. Vinyl also has several product variations to choose from. Read on to learn about the benefits of one particular product variation known as engineered vinyl plank (EVP). Floor Coverings International of Northwest San Antonio is here to help you choose the best flooring option for your San Antonio home, and engineered vinyl plank might be that choice!
What is Engineered Vinyl Plank (EVP)?
Engineered vinyl plank is a specific type of luxury vinyl product. Luxury vinyl refers to high quality vinyl flooring with realistic, textured prints of hardwood and stone covered with a durable and protective clear wear layer. Engineered vinyl plank—as the name implies—comes in a plank shape like hardwood planks. EVP is multilayered and consists of a top layer of vinyl, a middle layer of fiberboard, and usually a base layer called an underlayment, which is used for cushioning.
To further understand EVP, its important to go into more detail about the fiberboard core. If you are picturing a flimsy core that crumbles easily, then you are picturing low-density fiberboard, also known as particleboard. Fiberboard used in the core of engineered vinyl plank—as well as certain engineered hardwoods—is very dense and is referred to as either HDF or MDF cores. (HDF stands for high-density fiberboard, while MDF stands for medium-density fiberboard.) These fiberboard cores are either comparable in performance to plywood, or they can exceed plywood’s performance.
Engineered vinyl planks are installed with a click and lock process similar to installing laminate. These pieces can be installed “floating,” which means they do not need to be glued or attached to the sub-floor. Floating options provide easy installation as well as replacement and repair if pieces get damaged. Furthermore, because of EVP’s sturdy core and cushioning underlay, these planks can be installed over sub-floor with minor irregularities.
Benefits of EVP
One of the greatest benefits of engineered vinyl plank is that it is 100% waterproof. This makes it an excellent hardwood alternative for kitchens, bathrooms, basements, and laundry rooms. EVP is also scratch, stain, and wear resistant. All these qualities, along with EVP’s affordability and ease-of-installation, makes it an excellent flooring option for busy families.
